A mate-in-two is a forced sequence: whatever the defender tries, the second move finishes the game. That word forced is the whole puzzle. It is not enough to find a strong first move — every legal reply has to run into the same mate, which is why these are solved by checking the opponent's answers rather than by admiring your own idea.
How to spot it
- The first move is usually a check or a capture, because those leave the fewest replies to check.
- A sacrifice that drags the king onto a worse square is a common first move.
- Sometimes the first move is quiet: it takes away a flight square and hands the opponent the obligation to move.
- If one defensive reply survives, the line is not a mate in two, however good it looks.
A worked example
White: king h6, rook d2, pawns a2 and g7. Black: king f6, rook g1, pawn d3. Black to move.
- Rh1 checks along the h-file. White has exactly one legal answer — Rh2, blocking — because the black king already covers g5 and g6, and g7 is White's own pawn.
- Rxh2 takes the blocker and mates on the same file, with nothing left to interpose.
- That single forced reply is the whole puzzle: a strong first move is not enough if the defender has two ways to meet it.
